Using Baking Soda to Naturally Wash Hair

By

Source: Flicker.com

Baking soda is a great natural cleanser for most anything, I love using it to wash my hair because I've found that it works. Plain and simple - and natural! There's an overwhelming array of products on the store shelves these days, some cheap, some crazy expensive, all promising to do miracles to your hair. Washing (or no-pooing) with baking soda isn't going to do anything miraculous, but it will bring out the best natural qualities of your hair!

I've found that my hair has more volume, better shine, and stays clean longer with this simple cleanser. At the very least, its a cheap, uncomplicated choice for cleaning your beautiful locks!

I find that 2-3 tbsp baking soda stirred into 10 oz. of hot water is the perfect consistency for my hair, but I'd encourage you to experiment for yourself. If your scalp gets a bit itchy after the first several washes, lighten up on the baking soda a bit. If your hair tends on the oily side go ahead and work with 4 tbsp baking soda.

So after you get your little mixture made up jump on in the shower and get your hair wet just like you would if you were going to use traditional shampoo. The actual application of the baking soda is a bit different but certainly not difficult at all, just pour out the mixture over your hair. Make sure to hit the oilier parts of your scalp the most thoroughly.

Next, and be sure to do this before you rinse your hair, massage the mixture into your scalp. This not only gets everything squeaky-clean, it also stimulates the hair follicles, for thicker, longer hair. And heck, it feels good!

Rinsing the mixture should take less time than traditional shampoo, but its still important to let all the baking soda rinse out or you might notice scalp irritation. Condition your hair as usual, or keep up with the natural, simple theme and condition your hair with diluted vinegar. This blog is a good source of information on conditioning with vinegar.

I'd love to know what ya'll think,

Happy Cleansing!
